Agosti, Orlando Ramón

(1924–1997)

   Brigadier general, commander of the air force, and member of the first junta (1976– 1981) during the “dirty war” in Argentina. In 1985, at the trial of the nine junta commanders following the return to civilian rule, Agosti was sentenced to four and a half years in prison for his role in the repression—the air force was found to have been less active in the repression than the army and navy. A year later the Argentine Supreme Court upheld the conviction but reduced the sentence to three years and nine months. Agosti was the only member of the military to serve a full sentence for participating in the repression. He was released from prison in 1989. The two other members of the first junta, Jorge Rafael Videla and Emilio Massera, who had received life sentences, were released from prison in 1990 following a pardon by President Carlos Saúl Menem.
